FreeOx™ Technology

At an Air Force Base North Carolina

Setting

  • Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina
  • Two FreeOx™ systems. Active fighter jet flight line.
  • Jet fuel contamination in soil and groundwater. Floating product previously removed; only a sheen remains.

Hydrogeology

  • Fine sand aquifer:
  • Hydraulic conductivity:  unknown
  • Plume thickness:  3 - 4 ft
  • Depth to groundwater:  9 - 11 ft

Contamination

  • BTEX up to 2,400 ppb
  • C9 - C18 aliphatics up to 640,000 ppb
  • C9 - C22 aromatics up to 145,000 ppb
  • Primary Objective: Increase dissolved oxygen in groundwater to increase natural attenuation by aerobic degradation.

Operation Details

  • Two FreeOx™ systems, each with one extraction and one release well. The two systems operate at 0.5 gpm and 0.2 gpm.
  • Oxygenation of groundwater up to saturation with dissolved oxygen for removal of dissolved contaminants through biodegradation.
  • System startup scheduled for early summer 2009.
